His work, characterized by a challenge to dramatic conventions and language, came to prominence in the 1950s with plays that have since become classics, such as *The Bald Soprano*, *The Lesson*, and *The Chairs*. These photographs document two moments in Parisian theater life: one taken at the Studio des Champs-Élysées in 1956 during a performance of *The Chairs*, featuring Tsilla Chelton, Michel Jacquemont, and Jacques Mauclair, among others; the other at the Théâtre de France in 1966, where Ionesco appears alongside Jean-Louis Barrault during a performance of *Thirst and Hunger*. They attest to the author’s central role in the renewal of postwar European theater.
