Note: Fernandel (1903–1971), a French actor and singer, is considered one of the most popular figures in 20th-century French cinema. His career, marked by more than a hundred films, is notably associated with comedies that have become classics and with his unforgettable character Don Camillo.
These photographs, taken in 1959, show him alongside “Marguerite,” the cow who co-stars with him in the film *La Vache et le Prisonnier*, directed by Henri Verneuil that same year. Inspired by an episode from World War II, the film tells the story of a French prisoner’s escape as he crosses Germany accompanied by a cow in order to go unnoticed.
These images reflect the promotional campaign and visual imagery associated with this film, one of the great popular successes of French cinema in the late 1950s.
