SIMONE SIGNORET - Lot 169
SIMONE SIGNORET
At the time of shooting Costa-Gavras' film "L'Aveu" (with Yves Montand); a plate decorated by Fernand Léger in the background, 1969.
Photo attributed to Chris Marker (no photographer's credit), silver print on vintage cartoline paper, annotated on the back.
24 x 18.5 cm.
Note: hotograph showing Simone Signoret during the filming of L'Aveu, a political film directed by Costa-Gavras and released in 1970, starring Yves Montand. Adapted from Artur London's account of the Stalinist trials in Prague, the film was one of the major works of European political cinema in the late 1960s. Simone Signoret and Yves Montand, then the mythical couple of committed French cinema, embodied this period marked by strong intellectual and artistic commitment. The attribution of the photograph to Chris Marker reinforces the documentary interest of this print, as the filmmaker and photographer had close ties with political cinema and French intellectual circles at the time. The presence, in the background, of a plate decorated by Fernand Léger adds further visual evidence of the artistic universe surrounding the actors.
