THE WIND OF THE AURES Aicha Adjouri aka Keltoum in Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina's Algerian film, 1967. Photo, vintage silver print, stamps (including production) on back. 23 x 13.8 cm. Note: Photograph of Aïcha Adjouri, known as Keltoum, in Le Vent des Aurès, a film directed by Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina and released in 1967. A major work of Algerian cinema, this drama about the human consequences of the Algerian war follows the harrowing journey of a mother in search of her son, arrested by the colonial army. Presented at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the prize for Best First Feature, the film contributed to the international recognition of Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina, who would go on to win the Palme d'Or with Chronique des années de braise in 1975. Period promotional photographs bearing production stamps are important testimonies to the emergence of Maghreb cinema, and are sought after by collectors of committed cinema and African cinema.
