A major work in the early days of the Nouvelle Vague, the film tackles the sensitive context of the Algerian war, and was banned in France until 1963 due to its political subject matter.
Anna Karina's first major role under Godard's direction, Le Petit Soldat occupies an important place in the history of French cinema in the 1960s.
