Five vintage silver gelatin press prints. Typed or printed captions, stamps, handwritten annotations, and credits for Walter Carone / Sygma or Corbis Sygma on the reverse, depending on the copy. Approximately 20 × 25 to 20 × 30 cm. Note: This collection brings together five photographs taken by Walter Carone featuring two major figures of French culture. Four photographs are dedicated to the sculptor César (1921–1998), a major figure of New Realism, captured in June 1978 in the privacy of his home in Roquefort-les-Pins. The photo essay shows him at the market, with his wife Rosine and their daughter Anne, as well as in spontaneous scenes of family life, while he was preparing for his major retrospective at the Picasso Museum in Antibes in the summer of 1978. True to his documentary approach, Walter Carone reveals a more personal side of the artist, far from his studio and official events. The fifth print is dedicated to Jean Carmet, portrayed in the studio with the simplicity and mischief that characterize the actor. Through tight framing and subdued lighting, the photographer captures the full humanity of one of French cinema’s most popular actors. Retaining their original captions, stamps, and editorial annotations on the reverse, these press prints offer a representative snapshot of French photojournalism in the late 1970s.
