Founded in New York in the late 1960s, this collective of African American poets and musicians is considered one of the forerunners of contemporary spoken word and hip-hop. Their socially conscious lyrics, blending poetry, percussive rhythms, and political demands, accompanied the civil rights movements and the affirmation of Black identity in the United States. The film *Rights On!* stands today as a major document of the activist African American culture of that period and the emergence of the Black Power movement.
