Note: This photograph shows Émile-Othon Friesz in his studio during the 1940s. A founding member of the Fauvist movement alongside Henri Matisse, André Derain, and Maurice de Vlaminck, Friesz occupies an important place in the history of 20th-century French painting. Following the colorful experiments of Fauvism, he developed a more personal artistic language, combining solid composition with a sensitivity to light. Portraits of artists in their studios are particularly valuable records, offering insight into the creative environment and the intimacy of the artistic process. This photograph thus provides a direct glimpse into the life of one of the major figures of French modernism toward the end of his career.
