Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chair is a ubiquitous and unequivocal classic of modern design. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is an American of German origin. He created the Barcelona Chair for the German Pavilion for the Barcelona World's Fair in 1929. It is said that the chair he designed for the pavilion was inspired by the folding chair of the Pharaohs and the cross-shaped stool of the Romans. With the rise of Nazism in Germany, Mies went into exile. In 1938, he emigrated to the United States. Upon his arrival, he was already recognized as an influential designer. In 1953, he gave the exclusive license for the design of the Barcelona Chair to Knoll. The chair entered the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1977. The Barcelona Chair is meticulously handcrafted from start to finish. The frame is hand polished and skilled hands lay out the tufted leather. Knoll manufactures the frame in two different configurations in steel, chrome and stainless steel.
