Note from the Rodin Museum: The Kiss originally represented Paolo and Francesca, characters from The Divine Comedy, a poem by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321). Killed by Francesca's husband who had caught them kissing, the two lovers were condemned to wander in the Underworld. This group, conceived early by Rodin, in the creative process of The Gates of Hell, featured prominently at the bottom of the left leaf, facing Ugolin, until 1886, when the sculptor became aware that this representation of happiness and sensuality was in contradiction with the theme of his great project. He then turned it into an autonomous work and exhibited it as early as 1887. The supple and smooth modeling, the very dynamic composition and the charming theme made this group an immediate success. Since no anecdotal details were found to recall the identity of the two lovers, the public christened it Le Baiser, an abstract title that reflects its universal character. The French government ordered an enlarged marble version of the song, which took Rodin almost ten years to deliver. It was not until 1898 that he agreed to exhibit what he called his "grand bibelot" as a counterpart to the daring Balzac, as if to gain greater acceptance for the latter.
