Jean Després (1889-1980) is one of the most innovative artists of the 1920s and 1930s in the fields of jewelry and goldsmithing. At the age of 16, he left Avallon and his parents' gift store to begin his apprenticeship with a goldsmith in Paris. He completes his training with drawing lessons from the schools of the City of Paris and attends the Bateau-Lavoir, where he meets Modigliani, Picasso, Signac, De Chirico and, above all, Braque, who soon becomes his "best friend". Després works mainly with silver, whose whiteness is very fashionable in the 1930s.
