James Pradier
The young Pradier began his studies in Geneva, and it was there that Vivant-Denon, on a mission in this city, which had for some time become a French town and capital of the department of Lake Geneva, struck by his dispositions, decided to bring him to Paris. After taking classes with the painter François Gérard (1770-1837), he entered the École des Beaux Arts in 1811 in the studio of the sculptor Frédéric Lemot (1773-1827).
While devoting himself to sculpture, he continues to paint with talent. But he is quickly one of Lemot's most brilliant students and wins the Grand Prix de Rome in 1812. He stays 5 years in Rome and forges there his own way, close to the graceful elegance of 18th century statuary.
