The sculptor, pupil then friend of Aristide Maillol, had evolved from the full and round forms he liked in his youth to aerial lines playing with emptiness and light. The sculptor Robert Couturier died on Wednesday, October 1st in Paris, in his studio at the Villa Seurat, at the age of 103. Born on May 2, 1905 in Angoulême, he was the "last representative of a generation of artists (Germaine Richier, Alberto Giacometti, Maurice Estève, Jean Bazaine) who embodied post-war French creation", according to his biographer Valérie Da Costa. Robert Couturier had learned lithography at the Ecole Estienne in Paris, before making his first sculptures in the early 1920s.
