Antonio Maria Fabres y Costa
Spanish artist, born in Barcelona, Antonio Maria Fabres y Costa is very well known around the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century.
Antonio Maria Fabres y Costa began to study at the age of 13 at the "Escuela de Bellas Artes" in Barcelona. At the age of 21 he received a scholarship that allowed him to go to Rome. Some of his early sculptures are worth noting, but he is best known for his painting. His fame grew thanks to the taste of the bourgeoisie for exotic or medieval representations. He moved to Paris where his popularity grew, bringing him international acclaim.
After learning the rudiments of painting and sculpture with his father, while still very young he won the first medal of the Academy of St. Jordy, which allowed him to continue his studies in Rome where he was greatly influenced by the orientalist painting of Fortuny, who had just died.
After Rome, he moved to Barcelona and then to Paris where he was considered Fortuny's artistic successor.
It would be difficult to list his work as it is so prolific. He excelled in details, the elegance of clothes, the accuracy of proportions, the sensuality that emerges from the characters.
His paintings are still very present on the current market. Exotic and orientalist scenes remain the most coveted subjects, as shown by this oil on panel representing Moors in prayer, signed A Fabres, sold for 15,000 euros;
Paintings, whether oil on panel or oil on canvas, sell for between 6000 and 15000 euros. Everything depends on the subject. It is certain that a subject depicting a pastoral landscape will have much less appeal to collectors than a subject depicting a scene from orientalist life.
Drawings, often of live scenes or portraits of women, range from a few hundred euros to several thousand euros for watercolors or pastels.
