Many modern and contemporary artists are included in the catalog: from Rodin, César, Delaunay, to Banksy, there is something for everyone. Here, the paintings of several modern artists and landscape artists invite us to dream: this is the case of Alexander Roubtzoff (1884-1949), who, through his paintings, tells us about his adopted land. This Russian painter was born in Saint Petersburg and, after a first stay in Tunisia in 1914, fell in love with the country. He documents this ancient oriental culture and pays tribute to it through his painting. Here, Constantine, an oil on canvas on cardboard of 1938, is a remarkable work that translates this feeling of admiration and attachment that Roubtzoff had to Tunisia.
Among the contemporary painters, let us underline the presence of Hom Nguyen whose two works are in the catalog. Hom Nguyen is a French contemporary painter of Vietnamese origin, born in 1972 in Paris. He is a unique artist who has developed his own technique of creation, inspired by tattooing and leather skating. He traveled to Japan to perfect his skills, and inspired by his origins, creates works that reflect this mix between France and Asia. Straddling the line between figuration and abstraction, many of his works allow Hom Nguyen to express himself on issues of integration and immigration, and Roots (2019), a mixed technique on canvas, is part of this great reflection.
Sculpture is not to be outdone: indeed, Igor Mitoraj is one of those names that will attract the attention of art lovers and more particularly of sculpture. Several works by Mitoraj will be auctioned, including Aesclepius, a remarkable bronze with a green patina. Igor Mitoraj (1944-2014) is a German-born Polish artist, best known for his fragmented sculptures of the human body. He has created a number of monumental sculptures for public installations, often illustrating the suffering of 20th century Europe with a classical aesthetic. For the sculptor, parts of the body are more expressive than representations of the whole body, and one can only agree when looking at the Asclepius bust piece.
L'Énigme is another bronze sculpture with a shaded green patina, this one signed by Maurice Guiraud-Rivière (1881-1947). Headliner of this sale, this sculpture, as well as the artist, is not unknown to art connoisseurs. L'Énigme is the famous work presented at the 1925 Paris World Fair. French painter, draughtsman and sculptor, Maurice Guiraud-Rivière is a prolific modern artist, inspired by the Art Deco style and more particularly known for his bronze sculptures or chryselephantines, whose subjects turn sometimes around the woman, the sport, or the cars. L'Énigme is undoubtedly one of his most beautiful creations, an allegorical female representation whose Art Deco inspiration is undeniable.
The sale will close with a vintage section: fashion lovers will find their happiness among the various bags, silk squares, wallets and other accessories of great luxury brands, including Chanel, Hermès, Gucci, or Yves Saint-Laurent. This Boy Chanel bag in particular caught our eye: the ultimate in vintage chic, it shines with elegance, the aged gold metal trim contrasting nicely with the raspberry red lambskin leather. No doubt that this must-have accessory from the French label will capture the attention of fashion enthusiasts.
