Maurice Prost (1894-1967), A determined, innovative artist French sculptor Maurice Prost overcame the hardships of the First World War, which left him with an amputated arm, to become an outstanding animal artist. Gifted at drawing, he found his passion with Charles Valton and, after the war, fully committed himself to sculpture.
Returning to Paris in 1918, Prost explored direct carving with the support of his wife, becoming a drawing teacher at the Paris Chamber of Commerce for over two decades. An innovator, he used a compressed-air machine for direct carving and founded the Samothrace group in 1923.
His work was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon des Artistes Mutilés et Blessés de Guerre, and the 1931 Exposition Coloniale. The post-war period saw him create monumental sculptures, awarded the Légion d'Honneur and several gold medals.
Maurice Prost, a member of the Arts Décoratifs, excelled in animal art. Estimates for his sculptures vary, from small, common pieces estimated at a few hundred euros to major works fetching tens of thousands of euros.
