Who is Serge Poliakoff?

A major artist of the Paris School, Serge Poliakoff made his mark on the art market from the 1960s. Since then, his value has steadily increased, making him a safe bet in the market. Highly sought after by collectors, Poliakoff's works created from the 1950s are the most popular in auction rooms. Poliakoff developed a distinctive style characterized by geometric compositions and the use of bright and contrasting colors. He also explored effects of transparency, adding visual depth to his creations. Poliakoff's work is often described as poetic and expressive, evoking inner energy and capturing emotion through the skillful use of color and form. His unique style has positioned him as one of the major artists of abstraction.

The Life of Serge Poliakoff

Serge Poliakoff, a Franco-Russian artist, was born in Moscow in 1900. From a young age, Poliakoff was drawn to religious representations, prompting him to take drawing classes. After several years of traveling in major European capitals, living off his talent for the guitar, the young artist settled in Paris.

In the 1930s, Poliakoff joined the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and discovered abstract art during a stay in London. He also met renowned artists such as Kandinsky and the Delaunay couple. Inspired by this abstract movement, Serge Poliakoff became an important member.

In his paintings, Serge Poliakoff interweaves free forms of very bright colors. Often criticized for the overly decorative appearance of his work, the painter turned to a darker palette. The artist also produced engravings and tapestries.

It was not until the early 1950s that his creations adopted the geometric aesthetic for which he is known. In the 1960s, Serge Poliakoff abandoned structured and architectural forms to create almost monochromatic canvases or prints, where only the depth of color varied. Throughout his artistic career, his work was regularly exhibited in France and abroad. After receiving various awards, Serge Poliakoff obtained French nationality in 1962 and died a few years later.
