Antonin MERCIER - Lot 63
Antonin MERCIER Antonin MERCIER (1845-1916) - L'Almée ou la danse du ventre - Bronze with silver patina - Antique proof - Fonte Goupil et Cie éditeurs - Signed - 42,5 x 20 x 13 cm - Model after "L'Almée", painting by Jean-Léon Gérôme, presented at the 1864 Salon At the turn of 1870, Antonin Mercié embodied the young generation of French sculptors who wished to give a more vibrant expression to their figures, within a classical education. He sought this alliance between learned composition and nervous modeling in the great models of the Florentine Renaissance: hence the great and beautiful curves of the arm extended by the movement of the sword, the bent leg, the graceful movement of David who invites the viewer to turn around the different planes that progressively modulate the space. Between modern classicism and explicit realism, Mercié finds an original way.
