Louis FLOUTIER (1882-1936) - Paysage basque - Oil on canvas - Signed lower right - 65 x 101 cm - Slight craquelure and small loss Bilbiography : N°1467 of the Mary-Anne Prunet catalog raisonné View of the Spanish Basque Country or Aragon Note: Born in Toulouse, Louis Floutier set up his own studio in La Pergola, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in 1922, and devoted himself to painting the Basque country. His favorite subjects were the region's landscapes, customs and inhabitants. When he died in Saint-Jean-de-Luz in 1936, he left behind more than a thousand works, scattered today in private and public collections. Louis Floutier's love of the Basque country didn't develop immediately, but it grew deeper and deeper over time. Wandering with his easel from Urrugne to Ascain, from Saint-Jean-de-Luz to Mutriku, studying the subtle colors of gorse or checking whether the Nive was bluer above Arnaga all convinced him. As a lover of light, like many artists of the Impressionist era, he was quickly won over by the sea, the mountains and the white facades of the Labourd farms.
