Yoruba gelede crest, Nigeria - Lot 82
Yoruba gelede crest, Nigeria Wood with brown patina, pigments, accidents H. 42.5 cm - L. 36 cm Gelede helmet mask of classical construction. The lower part features a face, here whitened, with blue-tinted eyes and scarification marks, supporting two figures in the round depicted in hand-to-hand combat. Dedicated to women in their maternal dimension, gelede masquerades are intended to restore social harmony, a form of mistrust mingled with admiration that confers sometimes supernatural powers on women in Yorouba society.
