Jean and Joel MARTEL (1896-1966) - Lot 90
Jean and Joel MARTEL (1896-1966) Magpie Bronze with shaded and gilded brown patina Signed on the front edge of the terrace "J. Martel". Round foundry stamp Susse Frères éditeurs Paris, framed by the letters "BV". Anoté sur la tranche de côté de la terrasse " Susse Fes Edts Paris ". Model created circa 1926-1929. 33 x 24 x 9 cm Bibliography: "Joël et Jan Martel sculpteurs 1896-1966", Gallimard / Electa, 1996, for a similar model referenced on page 178 under n°45. A similar model was exhibited at the Exposition du Portique, Paris, 1926; at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, Paris, 1927; and at the Salon des Arts et Industries de Luxe, Trouville, 1929. Note: Pie is a bronze sculpture with a shaded brown and gold patina by Jean and Joel Martel, created around 1926-1929. The work depicts a magpie with finesse and realism, capturing the beauty of the bird in a natural pose. The nuanced brown and golden patina adds depth and a tactile dimension to the sculpture, while the signature "J. Martel" and the foundry stamp of Susse Frères guarantee the work's authenticity and provenance. Exhibited at several important fairs in the 1920s, this piece is a fine example of the animal art of the Art Deco period, when artists blended abstraction and naturalism in their sculptures. This work is a great opportunity for collectors interested in the sculptures of Jean and Joel Martel, or in early twentieth-century bronze art.
