20th century French school The hill of Montmartre Oil on canvas Signed lower right 46.5 x 65 cm Note: This Butte Montmartre painted by a French artist of the XXᵉ century offers a vibrant, almost naïve vision of the famous Parisian monument. The Sacré-Coeur, bathed in chalky light, stands out powerfully against a uniformly blue sky, while the vegetation, rendered in broad, thick, contrasting strokes, lends the scene a very painterly energy. The overall effect is one of expressive spontaneity, reminiscent of post-impressionist aesthetics and the modernist painters' attachment to color and matter. The work celebrates both the monument and the vitality of the Montmartre district, rendered here with a free, intuitive sensibility.
