20th century French school - Lot 21

20th century French school Still life Oil on canvas Signed lower left 50 x 65 cm Note: This still life, typical of 20thᵉ century French painting, brings together bottle, teapot and fruit around a pot of flowers in warm hues. The forms are simplified, shaped by broad, supple strokes and a soft chromaticism dominated by pinks, greens and oranges. The overall effect is one of intimacy and serenity, reinforced by a deliberately sketchy background that emphasizes the objects in the foreground. The composition, balanced and punctuated by a dialogue between rounded volumes and expansive foliage, bears witness to a decorative sensibility and a taste for pleasure painting. Signed lower left, this work is a fine example of modernist tradition applied to the still-life genre.
