The frame becomes an active element: it not only surrounds the figure, it is grasped, held, as if the subject were seeking to extract itself or support the very space of the photograph. Here, Soares plays with the codes of classical portraiture by dramatizing them, giving the figure a presence that is both strong and stylized. The image oscillates between self-affirmation and staging, between icon and character.
