Francis SCHKLOWSKY, known as Francis S. Bataille (1949) - Lot 181
Francis SCHKLOWSKY, known as Francis S. Bataille (1949)
Binoculars and Degas, 1990
Vintage silver print
Signed and numbered 5/10 in pencil on the back
Dimensions: 30.3 x 44 cm
Note: In Les Jumelles et Degas (1990), Francis Schklowsky, aka Francis S. Bataille, captures a moment of silent confrontation between childhood and art history. The photograph contrasts a sculpture by Degas - an emblematic figure of modernity and the representation of the body - with the face of a little girl, absorbed in attentive, almost mimetic contemplation. The subtle interplay of profiles and upward gazes creates a mirror effect between the sculpted work and the child, blurring the boundaries between living subject and artistic figure.
Bataille's tight framing, black-and-white treatment and use of blur create an atmosphere that is both intimate and meditative. The image questions the transmission of the eye, the way in which art is inscribed in the sensitive experience of childhood, and how masterpieces dialogue with future generations. This vintage silver print, signed and numbered, is fully in line with humanist, reflective photography, where the museum becomes a meeting place for artistic memory and contemporary emotion.
