Note: Born in 1962, Thierry Valencin takes a photographic approach in which the image is not only captured, but also constructed and transformed. His work is distinguished by a particular attention to the materiality of the medium and the possibilities of direct intervention on the negative, blurring the boundary between photography and artwork.
Montmartre, Paris, 1993 bears witness to this experimental approach. Far from being a simple documentary view, the image here is reworked through intervention on the negative, giving the scene a singular, almost dreamlike dimension. This process transforms the photograph into a unique object, where the artist's gesture becomes as important as the subject represented.
The choice of Montmartre, a place steeped in artistic history and visual mythology, reinforces this reading: more than a neighborhood, it becomes a space of poetic and symbolic projection. The unique silver print, produced in 2003, underscores the artist's desire to move away from the traditional reproducibility of photography towards an original work in the full sense of the word.
Stamped and signed by the artist, this is a rare work at the crossroads of photography, plastic experimentation and the search for a personal visual style.
