José NICOLAS (1956)
Bread seller, Beirut, Lebanon, 2002
Lambda print

Dimensions including margins: 30 x 24 cm
Note: In this photograph, José Nicolas takes a deeply humanist look at the daily lives of the men and women he meets on his travels. Far from staging, his approach favors the right moment, the sincerity of the gesture and the dignity of the subject. Here, the bread seller, captured in a moment of movement and toil, becomes a universal figure of work, perseverance and anchorage in a territory.
Born in 1956, José Nicolas has been developing his photographic work for several decades, focusing on the social, cultural and human realities of the contemporary world. His work is in the tradition of sensitive reportage, where aesthetics are never detached from meaning. Each image is conceived as a testimony, but also as an encounter.
This print, numbered and signed by the artist, is part of a limited edition approach that underlines the documentary as well as artistic value of the work. It's not just a question of preserving an image, but of preserving a memory, a fragment of reality, a way of looking at the world at a precise moment in time.
