HARTER (20th) - Lot 52
HARTER (20th)
Face of the shadow
Oil on canvas
Titled on the back and signed
Dimensions: 46 x 38 cm
Note : In Visage de l'ombre, the artist exploits pictorial matter at its most raw and expressive. The dense, almost sculptural impastos hollow out and shape a face that seems to be struggling to emerge from the darkness. Deep blacks, anthracites and grays dominate the composition, punctuated by flashes of red or yellow that suggest bursts of emotion beneath the surface. This barely revealed figure, as if imprisoned in the paste, lends the whole a dramatic intensity akin to Expressionism.
A work in which gesture, texture and chiaroscuro replace drawing to give substance to a troubling, inner presence.
