Chessboard: 5 sets of chess figures and 1 board - Lot 139

Chessboard: 5 sets of chess figures and 1 board Used condition, wear, slight missing parts, missing horse's head on one of the sets. Note: Testifying to both playful and decorative use, this chess set illustrates the permanence of the game as a cultural and craft object throughout the XXᵉ century. The turned pieces, with their varied profiles and differentiated patinas, reflect distinct productions and repeated use, giving the set an authentic character. The wooden tray, marked by time and successive parts, completes this heterogeneous ensemble, reflecting a domestic practice rather than a strictly ceremonial object. Despite wear and tear, these chess sets retain a strong evocative presence, combining the pleasure of the game, traditional know-how and the memory of past uses.
