Note: Alain Declercq, who usually transposes the noir novel into the field of visual arts, changes his modus operandi and publishes his first detective novel. Alain Declercq's work stems from everyday life, from a kind of paranoia that drives his interest in power and its material embodiment. His text, published by éditions jannink, is the first detective story in the "L'art en écrit" collection. In the spirit of Niki de Saint-Phalle, Chris Burden and Jacques Monory, he offers us a work of protest, acting on the facts and objects of reality, transposing the noir novel into the field of the plastic arts. The author, more accustomed to expressing himself in the visual arts, changes his modus operandi while maintaining his focus on everyday violence. With Boum Julie, he takes us on a tale of counter-espionage, where conspiracy, violence, murder and weapons are the order of the day. And when you consider that in 2005, the anti-terrorist brigade raided his studio, believing him to be a member of the Al Qaeda network, you have to wonder where fiction ends and reality begins. Alain Declercq (b. 1969, Moulins, France; lives and works in Paris and New York) has made his mark on the art scene with a practice in which the manipulation of the visible becomes the object of perceptual intrigue. Installations, photographs, drawings and films are all ways of exploring the language of power and the oppression it engenders. With humor, often irony, Alain Declercq plays with security schizophrenias and surveillance devices. All kinds of strategies are used to disquiet reality and expose the devices: shadowing, infiltration, investigation. These are all techniques from the spy novel that Alain Declercq has reinvested in his pieces and in the exhibition devices themselves. The first edition of the book is accompanied by a unique drawing in each copy.
