Note: Erik Boulatov, born in 1933 in Sverdlovsk, in the Urals, studied art at the famous Sourikov Institute in Moscow, which provided a rigorous education that banned the names Malevich, Kandinsky and Chagall. In 1988, he had his first solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Zürich, then at the Centre Pompidou. He moved to Paris in 1991, where his work enjoyed a visibility it had never known before. He exhibited at the Dina Vierny gallery in 1992 - where he had already been shown in a group show in 1972 - at the Phyllis Kind gallery in New York in 1994, and at the Musée Maillol in Paris in 1999, before the Tretiakov gallery in Moscow gave him his first retrospective in Russia in 2003. More recently, he exhibited at the Paris MAM in 2007, and at the Fiac and Pièce Unique galleries in Paris. In Tableau et peinture, a bilingual French/Russian text (with facing facsimile translations of the manuscript), he explains his conception of a canvas, as well as his interest in the tableau itself, which he favors over painting. The first edition is a signed and enhanced silkscreen.
