Buren - Lot 141
Buren the ineffable about Ryman's work 48 pages, paperback, dust jacket Circulation: 295 copies (also available as a current edition in the "Wide Open" collection) "L'art en écrit" 1999, Editions Janninck A leaflet with 8.7 cm stripes is included. Format: 125 x 210 mm (French) Note: Co-founder of the BMTP group, Daniel Buren (b. 1938, Boulogne-Billancourt) is a major figure on the international art scene. An essential visual artist and theorist, since the early 1960s he has been developing a radical style of painting that plays on both the economy of means employed and the relationship between content (the medium) and form (the paint) to produce site-specific, often ephemeral works. In 1965, Daniel Buren adopted the rhythm of a striped canvas, alternating white and colored bands 8.7 cm wide. The introduction of what he calls a "visual tool" at the end of 1967 laid the foundations for a practice that broke with tradition, opening up a multi-faceted body of work in which freedom is born of internal and external constraints, as the artist likes to emphasize. Daniel Buren explores this "visual tool" by developing it in the plane and, from the late 1960s, in three dimensions. For Daniel Buren, writing about his friend Robert Ryman is a way of better understanding a body of work in which the artist's approach is confronted with the obsessions of collectors, museum directors and the poverty of photographic reproduction. For him, it is also an introspection into his own work. This previously unpublished text is accompanied by an 8.7 cm striped leaflet.
