Rick Griffin (1944-1991) - Lot 18

Rick Griffin (1944-1991) Head Shop Poster, circa 1967 Poster produced for the Berkeley Bonaparte Cie, 2nd color edition (MSO-222.1967.01.2) Condition: Tack holes, stain top left) Note: This poster is emblematic of "head shop" production, intended for commercial distribution in West Coast underground boutiques in the late 1960s. Rick Griffin deploys his characteristic graphic vocabulary: organic lettering, mystical and counter-cultural iconography, dense visual treatment typical of the Californian psychedelic aesthetic. These posters, distinct from the concert posters (FD, BG, NR), testify to the democratization of psychedelic imagery beyond the strict musical framework. 52 x 33 cm
