M. DORAT, "Les Baisers, précédés du mois de mai", 1784 Printed in Amsterdam by Marc-Michel REY Cover damaged, foxing, soiling, tears on pages 87-88, folds 13.8 x 7.8 cm Note: An emblematic work of XVIIIᵉ century galant literature, Les Baisers de Dorat embodies the light, refined and sensual spirit of its time. Inspired by Antiquity and the Latin poets, the author celebrates love, pleasure and the games of seduction in elegant, delicately suggestive writing. Published in Amsterdam in 1784 by Marc-Michel Rey, a publisher renowned for its sometimes audacious works, this book is part of the libertine and worldly tradition of the late Ancien Régime. Le Mois de mai, which precedes the text, prolongs the atmosphere of lightness and renewal so dear to galant poetry. With its small format, this work evokes the intimate reading books intended for a cultivated public with a taste for poetry and refinement. Despite the marks of time, it retains all the charm and spirit of elegant, seductive literature, much appreciated by bibliophiles.
