"Oeuvres complètes de P.-J. DE BERANGER", 1847 Volume one Publisher Perrotin New edition revised by the author Illustrated with engravings after drawings by Charlet, Lemud, Johannot, Daubigny, Pauquet, Jacques, Penguilly, de Rudder, Raffet, Sandoz Ex libris M. Henri Delor, civil court judge 412 pages Good condition: Missing title page, foxing, damp stains, slight soiling. 24.5 x 16.2 cm Note: A major figure in 19th-century popular song and poetry, Pierre-Jean de Béranger made a name for himself with his committed lyrics, combining satirical wit, sensitivity and social criticism. His songs, widely distributed, accompanied the political upheavals of his time and contributed to his great popularity. This 1847 edition, revised by the author himself, bears witness to this success. It is enriched by a large set of engravings by well-known artists, illustrating and extending Béranger's universe, between genre scenes, historical evocations and expressive portraits. Beyond its literary interest, this work is a fine example of the illustrated book of the 19th century, where text and image are in close dialogue. Despite a few imperfections, it retains its appeal for lovers of poetry, history and bibliophily.
