JEANNE MOREAU, the Sphinx in Jean Cocteau's play "La machine - Lot 5
JEANNE MOREAU, the Sphinx in Jean Cocteau's play "La machine infernale" (set by Christian Bérard), 1954 Photo probably by Boris Lipnitzki, vintage silver print Stamp partly erased and annotated on the back Dimensions: 19.3 x 18 cm. Note: This photograph shows Jeanne Moreau (1928-2017) as the Sphinx in Jean Cocteau's play La Machine infernale, performed at the theater in 1954 with sets by Christian Bérard. Written in 1934, this work is one of the most famous reinterpretations of the Oedipus myth, which Cocteau revisits in a form that blends ancient tragedy and poetic modernity. At the time, Jeanne Moreau was still mainly a stage actress and member of the Comédie-Française, before becoming one of the great figures of European cinema from the late 1950s onwards. The photograph is probably by Boris Lipnitzki (1887-1971), a Russian photographer based in Paris and famous for his portraits of artists, actors and writers, whose work today constitutes a major testimony to Parisian cultural life in the XXᵉ century.
