JEAN MARAIS, stage director and actor: "Britannicus" (1952) - Lot 59
JEAN MARAIS, stage director and actor: "Britannicus" (1952) and "Le Disciple du diable" (1968) 2 photos, vintage silver prints Photographer's credit in one image, captioned on one back, photographer's stamp on one and annotated on the second Dimensions: 13 x 18 cm & 23.5 x 18 cm Note: A major actor of French theater and cinema, Jean Marais (1913-1998) was one of the most outstanding performers of his generation. Discovered and supported by Jean Cocteau, of whom he became one of his favorite actors, he also led an important career on stage. These two photographs document his theatrical activity at two distinct moments: in Jean Racine's Britannicus in 1952, a classic tragedy of the French repertoire, and in George Bernard Shaw's The Devil's Disciple, a staged play in 1968. They illustrate the central role played by Jean Marais in post-war French theater, where he alternated between classical roles and modern plays.
