JAMES DEAN in New York, 1950s - Lot 69
JAMES DEAN in New York, 1950s Photo by Dennis Stock, later silver print (1960s) Dull back Dimensions: 16.4 x 23.2 cm Note: James Dean (1931-1955), an American actor who became a mythical figure in cinema, embodied the image of rebellious youth in the 1950s. His meteoric career included three iconic films: Elia Kazan's East of Eden (1955), Nicholas Ray's Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and George Stevens' Giant (1956). This photograph was taken in New York in the 1950s by Magnum photographer Dennis Stock (1928-2010). In 1955, Stock produced the now-famous James Dean series, capturing the actor in urban, everyday scenes that helped forge his iconic image. The print presented here, made later in the 1960s, bears witness to the widespread and enduring popularity of these images, which are among the most famous portraits in the history of film photography.
