GEORGES BRASSENS, the author, composer and performer in conc - Lot 81
GEORGES BRASSENS, the author, composer and performer in concert, 1950s Photo by Henri Guilbud, vintage silver print Stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back Dimensions: 29.8 x 23.3 cm Note: Georges Brassens (1921-1981), French author, composer and performer, remains one of the major figures of French-language chanson of the XXᵉ century. His work, characterized by poetic writing, great freedom of tone and often sparse guitar accompaniment, had a profound impact on French chanson. Revealed in the early 1950s on Parisian stages, he soon enjoyed lasting success with songs that became classics such as Le Gorille (1952), La Mauvaise Réputation (1952) and Les Copains d'abord (1964). This photograph, taken in the 1950s by photographer Henri Guilbaud, shows the artist in concert, testifying to his direct relationship with the audience and the atmosphere of the early years of his stage career. It forms part of the press iconography devoted to one of the greatest songwriters of French chanson.
