Count Basie (1904-1984), American pianist, bandleader and composer, was one of the great figures of jazz and swing in the XXᵉ century. At the head of his famous Count Basie Orchestra, founded in the 1930s, he developed an orchestral style characterized by great rhythmic precision and a remarkable sense of swing, earning him the nickname "The Swing Machine". His orchestra accompanied and revealed many of jazz's leading soloists, helping to popularize the genre far beyond the United States. This 1950s photograph by photographer Jean-Pierre Leloir, an important figure in French jazz photography, is part of the press iconography devoted to the great musicians of the swing era and international touring.
