Note: American singer and pianist, Nat King Cole (1919-1965) remains one of the great figures of jazz and popular song in the XXᵉ century. First recognized as pianist and leader of the Nat King Cole Trio, he rose to international fame in the 1950s thanks to his velvety voice and such classic songs as Unforgettable, Mona Lisa and Nature Boy.
The photographs presented here testify to his presence in Allen Reisner's 1958 film St. Louis Blues, a fictionalized biography of composer W. C. Handy, often considered the "father of the blues". Nat King Cole plays the lead role, surrounded by an exceptional cast of African-American musical greats including Eartha Kitt, Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald and Mahalia Jackson.
This film represents an important moment in Nat King Cole's career: it was his only starring role in a Hollywood feature film, and the work is appreciated today as a remarkable testimony to the post-war African-American music scene.
These vintage silver prints, one of which is mounted on cardboard and bears annotations and a stamp on the reverse, illustrate both a portrait of the singer and a filming scene featuring several of the singer's actors.
