JOSEPHINE BAKER as an Arlesian, with her adopted children an - Lot 122
JOSEPHINE BAKER as an Arlesian, with her adopted children and a young singer, 1959/62 3 photos, vintage silver prints Captioned (dated labels) and stamped on all backs Note: Josephine Baker (1906-1975), Franco-American dancer, singer and actress, was one of the great figures of music hall and artistic life in the XXᵉ century. Revealed in Paris in the 1920s with the Revue nègre, she enjoyed an international career, while also becoming involved during the Second World War in the French Resistance, then in various humanitarian actions. These photographs, taken between 1959 and 1962, show her in Arlésienne costume, surrounded by some of her adopted children, members of the "rainbow tribe" she raised at the Château des Milandes, and in the company of a young singer. They testify to the artist's public image at the end of her career, combining humanist commitment, family life and presence on the artistic scene. Dimensions: 13 x 18 cm each.
