JACQUES BREL AND CLAUDE CHABROL in a bar, 1950s - Lot 134
JACQUES BREL AND CLAUDE CHABROL in a bar, 1950s Photo, silver print on vintage cartoline paper Annotated on the back Dimensions: 9 x 14 cm Note: This photograph brings together Jacques Brel (1929-1978) and Claude Chabrol (1930-2010) in a bar in the 1950s, when their respective careers were still in their infancy. Jacques Brel, a Belgian singer and songwriter, gradually established himself on the Parisian scene in the late 1950s, before going on to become one of the leading figures in French-language chanson, with songs such as Ne me quitte pas and Amsterdam. Claude Chabrol, on the other hand, was one of the young critics from Cahiers du cinéma who participated in the emergence of the Nouvelle Vague, a movement of which he was one of the first directors with Le Beau Serge (1958). This image bears witness to the artistic milieu of post-war Paris, where musicians, filmmakers and intellectuals mingled in the cafés and bars that were then veritable hotbeds of cultural sociability.
