MARCEL PAGNOL, Academician, 1947 2 photos, vintage silver prints Captioned (labels) and stamped by a photo studio on the backs Dimensions: 24.2 x 18 cm each Note: Marcel Pagnol (1895-1974), French writer, playwright and filmmaker, is one of the great figures of XXᵉ century literature and cinema. Author of such successful plays as Marius (1929), Fanny (1931) and César (1936), he also developed a major cinematic body of work and a series of childhood memoirs that have become classics, including La Gloire de mon père and Le Château de ma mère. In 1946, he was elected to the Académie française, becoming one of the first filmmakers to be admitted to the French Academy. These photographs, taken in 1947, testify to this period of institutional recognition, showing Marcel Pagnol in his status as an Academician, at a time when his literary and cinematographic work was already widely recognized.
