LOUIS ARAGON, the poet in profile, 1970s. - Lot 174
LOUIS ARAGON, the poet in profile, 1970s. Photo by Jean-Louis Bareux, vintage aregntique print Stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back. Dimensions: 18 x 24 cm. Note: Louis Aragon (1897-1982), French poet, novelist and essayist, was one of the major literary figures of the XXᵉ century. A co-founder of Surrealism alongside André Breton in the 1920s, he went on to develop a considerable literary body of work blending poetry, the novel and political commitment. The author of the novel cycle Le Monde réel and numerous collections of poetry, he left a profound mark on post-war French poetry. Several of his texts, set to music by the likes of Léo Ferré and Jean Ferrat, helped to spread his work far and wide. This photograph, taken in the 1970s by Jean-Louis Bareux, shows a profile portrait of the poet, an image typical of the iconography devoted to Aragon at the end of his life, when he was recognized as one of the great figures of contemporary French literature.
