COLETTE, the writer and her sulfide collection, 1950s - Lot 179
COLETTE, the writer and her sulfide collection, 1950s Photo by Robert Doisneau (no photographer's stamp), vintage silver print (for the press, according to the publication stamps on the back 1952 and 1953) Annotated and labeled on back Folds Dimensions: 23.6 x 19.2 cm Traces of handling (paper breaks at corners, small ink stains at one corner) Note: Photograph depicting Colette (Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, 1873-1954), novelist, journalist and major figure of French literature of the XXᵉ century, in her interior surrounded by her collection of sulfures. Author of a major body of work including Claudine à l'école (1900), Chéri (1920) or Gigi (1944), Colette was elected a member of the Académie Goncourt in 1945 and remains one of the great voices of French literature. In the last years of her life, she received many visitors to her apartment in the Palais-Royal in Paris, where she lived surrounded by personal objects and mementos. The photograph is attributed to Robert Doisneau (1912-1994), a major figure in French humanist photography. Taken in the early 1950s, it was distributed in the press, as indicated by the publication stamps dated 1952 and 1953 on the back of the print. It bears witness to the intimate iconography devoted to the writer at the end of her life.
