JEAN COCTEAU in his bathrobe in St Jean Cap Ferrat, 1958 - Lot 181
JEAN COCTEAU in his bathrobe in St Jean Cap Ferrat, 1958 Photo by Denis Brihat, later print (1970s) on cartoline paper Stamped by the photographer and annotated on the back Dimensions: 30.3 x 23.7 cm Some breaks in the paper (only visible against the light). Note: Jean Cocteau (1889-1963), French poet, playwright, draughtsman and film director, was one of the major figures of artistic life in the XXᵉ century. Close to the avant-garde, he developed a protean body of work blending literature, theater, cinema and the graphic arts. His most famous films include Beauty and the Beast (1946) and Orphée (1950). This photograph, taken in 1958 in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, shows the artist in his bathrobe in an intimate setting, an image that evokes Cocteau's daily life on the Côte d'Azur, a region where he frequently spent the last years of his life. The photograph was taken by Denis Brihat (b. 1928), an important figure in French photography, known for his portraits and his aesthetic research into the photographic image. The print presented here, made later in the 1970s, is part of the iconography devoted to the artist at the end of his career.
