EAST - WEST, around the Berlin Wall, 1961 - Lot 197
EAST - WEST, around the Berlin Wall, 1961 9 photos, vintage silver prints Captioned (dated labels) and stamped on backs Dimensions: 13 x 18 cm each Note: Set of photographs taken around the Berlin Wall in 1961, when it was being erected. Erected on the night of August 12-13, 1961 by the authorities of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the wall separated East and West Berlin and became one of the major symbols of the Cold War and the division of Europe. These images document the first scenes related to this newly established border - separation devices, military presence and population reactions - at a time when the city was becoming a focal point for tensions between the East and West blocs. These press photographs bear witness to the beginnings of this barrier that became a global symbol of political and ideological division in the second half of the XXᵉ century. Sign of aging on a photo.
