SIMONE VEIL AND JACQUES CHIRAC, vote on the abortion law, 19 - Lot 200
SIMONE VEIL AND JACQUES CHIRAC, vote on the abortion law, 1974 2 photos by Gilbert Uzan, 2 vintage silver prints, photographer's stamp on backs. Note: Photographs showing Simone Veil (1927-2017), then Minister of Health, and Jacques Chirac (1932-2019), a major figure in French political life, at the time of the vote for the law legalizing voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVG) in 1974. Spearheaded by Simone Veil and adopted by the French National Assembly in January 1975, this law represented a major reform of French society, authorizing abortion under certain conditions and marking a milestone in the evolution of women's rights. These photos by photographer Gilbert Uzan bear witness to one of the most significant moments in French political life in the 1970s, and to the media coverage of the debate surrounding this historic reform.
