TENNIS PLAYERS - BELLE EPOQUE, tennisman, champions (only An - Lot 229
TENNIS PLAYERS - BELLE EPOQUE, tennisman, champions (only Anthony Wilding identified), 1900s 7 photos, silver and citrate prints Annotated on one back Dimensions: from 7.2 x 9.7 cm to 10.5 x 12.7 cm Remnants of paper on some spines and two missing corner tips Note: This set of photographs depicts a number of tennis players from the Belle Époque, a period during which the sport flourished in Europe and English-speaking countries. Among the players featured, Anthony Wilding (1883-1915) has been identified. One of the most famous New Zealand champions of the early XXᵉ century, Wilding won four consecutive Wimbledon titles between 1910 and 1913 and also took part in several of the British team's Davis Cup victories. A leading figure in international tennis before the First World War, he died in action in 1915 during the conflict. These images bear witness to the nascent sporting iconography of tennis in the Belle Époque, a period when photography and the photographic card helped to disseminate the image of champions and popularize the sport among the public.
